As a small business grows, there comes a point where technology stops being “the computer that breaks down” and becomes the center of operations: email, invoicing, cameras, telephony, backups. And at that point, many companies ask themselves: do we hire an IT person or keep getting by however we can?

Managed services —known as MSP, for managed service provider— are the third option: having a complete IT department, but as a monthly service.

What an MSP is

A managed service provider takes care of your company’s day-to-day technology for a fixed fee. Instead of calling a technician when something breaks, the MSP monitors, prevents and responds before the problem stops you.

What it usually includes

  • Proactive monitoring: devices are watched constantly, not just when a user reports a problem.
  • Up-to-date updates and security patches.
  • Antivirus and email protection.
  • Remote support, and on-site support when needed.
  • Backup management, with restore tests.
  • Inventory and control of the devices on the network.

All with a predictable monthly cost, without surprises billed by the hour.

Reactive vs. proactive

The traditional model is reactive: something breaks, you call, the technician arrives and you pay by the hour. The problem is that by then operations have already stopped, and every incident is paid for separately.

An MSP flips that logic: it detects the disk that is about to fail before it fails, updates the device before it can be exploited and keeps small problems from turning into complete outages.

Is it right for your company?

Probably yes, if this sounds familiar:

  • There is no one dedicated to IT and problems get solved “when we can”.
  • Every incident costs a different amount and is hard to budget.
  • Equipment is replaced without a clear plan.
  • Security is a concern, but nobody is managing it.

How to choose well

Ask them to explain what the fee includes and what is left out, how quickly they respond to an incident and how they document what they do. A good MSP doesn’t just fix things: it leaves your network organized, with every change documented.
