When the network fails, the business stops
WiFi that drops in the middle of a meeting, Internet that slows down mid-morning, a meeting room with no signal or a whole morning without invoicing because the only Internet line went down. These are symptoms many small businesses in Costa Rica treat as normal, but they almost always have a specific cause: home access points serving dozens of devices, overloaded switches, a flat network where everything is mixed together or dependence on a single link.
At SYSCOM we have worked with businesses since 2001, and we have seen that most of these problems are not solved by restarting the router. They are solved with a design built around the number of users, the space and what the business needs to keep working at all times.
Understand first, install second
Every business networking project starts with an assessment. We document what equipment is there, how it is configured, where traffic gets congested and which areas lack coverage. We also check the basics that are often forgotten: default passwords, outdated firmware and ports nobody manages. If you want to know the most common signs of a network that needs attention, you can read our article on when a network needs an audit.
With that picture we design the network with Ubiquiti UniFi and MikroTik equipment, brands that make it possible to manage everything from a central console. The physical layer matters too: good WiFi depends on structured cabling in good condition, so we review it as part of the design and, if needed, it can be included in the project.
Segment the network and have a plan B for the Internet
Two concepts change the way a company network works.
VLAN segmentation means dividing one physical network into several logical networks. In practice, staff computers, security cameras, IP phones and guest WiFi are kept separate. A guest can’t see internal devices, a camera doesn’t compete with the phone system and, if a device is compromised, the problem stays contained within its segment.
Internet failover is the automatic backup between two links. You contract two lines, ideally from different providers, and the router decides which one the traffic goes through. If the main one fails, the secondary takes over on its own, without anyone having to move cables. For businesses that invoice online, serve customers over IP phones or work in the cloud, that continuity makes all the difference.
What changes for your business
With a well-designed and well-managed network, you stop guessing. When something fails, the central console shows which device has the problem and where it is. Depending on the contracted plan, we can monitor the network, apply updates and handle incidents remotely anywhere in the country, with on-site visits in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). Requests are logged in the Soporte Digital portal, so you have the history of every case.
The result is a network that grows with your business: adding an access point, a branch or a new segment is done on an orderly, documented foundation, not on patches.
